“Summer Palace” director banned for erotic movie on Tiananmen Square

Lou Ye the much acclaimed director was banned from making movies for 5 years - for sending his latest movie “Summer Palace” (Starring: Hao Lei, Guo Xiaodong, Hu Ling, Zhang Xianmin) which is an erotic love story based on the crackdown of Tiananmen Square (1989), to Cannes film festival without government approval.

This is not first time the controversial director is in trouble for his movies. He was first blacklist in 2000 for his Rotterdam Film Festival winner “Suzhou River”.

It might not be the love story or the erotic nature of the movie for it being getting a ban but it would have been more due to the film’s backdrop. Chinese government still considers the event of Tiananmen Square (1989) that happened 18 years ago “counter-revolutionary”.

The other person related to the movie were its 2 producers which includes Nai An were also banned for 5 years. According to the Chinese rules the movie “Summer Palace” will be confiscated and will be fined in the tune of 5 to 10 times of the income movie makes.

“Summer Palace” will premiere in North America on September 13 and 14 at the Toronto International Film Festival.
